Crystal Report 2010 Hosting :: New Features in Crystal Report 2010

clock October 10, 2010 16:18 by author Administrator

Ever since Visual Basic 2 released in 1993, Crystal Reports has been an integral part of the Microsoft developer experience.   Up until this article is released, Crystal Report 2010 has not yet come up. The developers on BusinessObjects are still working on the beta version and the full release is due on Q3 2010.

Even though this product has not been fully released yet, we can take a “sneak preview” of changes made on this Crystal Report 2010 version, what exciting new features we can expect and things that remain on this version. This article will elaborate Crystal Report 2010 product feature in a concise way. For anyone that is looking to host Crystal Report, you can consider asphostcentral.com as your
crystal report hosting provider.

Things that change on Crystal Report 2010:

- Crystal Reports will no longer be included in Visual Studio 2010
- Instead, Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 will be provided by SAP as a
free download, no registration required
-
Because its now delivered separately, the delivery dates don't exactly line up
- A production release will be no later than Q3 2010
- The EULA for Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 will match the Crystal Reports 2008 EULA.  The only material change when comparing the EULA with Visual Studio 2008 is that free external redistribution for web applications is no longer included.  Its purchased separately with the
Crystal Reports Developer Advantage runtime license
- The MSM runtime will be unavailable.  MSI and ClickOnce will be the supported deployment methods for the runtime engine

Things that do not change on Crystal Report 2010:

- Unlimited internal distribution of thick client and server applications that embed the Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 runtime is included - same as Visual Studio 2008
- Unlimited external distribution of thick client applications that embed the Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 runtime is included - same as Visual Studio 2008
- Both 32-bit and 64-bit runtimes are available.  This is unchanged compared to Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008, but the presence of a 64-bit runtime is a major net new feature for Crystal Reports 2008 customers

New Features in Crystal Report 2010:

- New WPF Viewer
- New XLSX export to take advantage of the big grid for data-only Excel exports
- Improved report viewing experience provides more interactivity to end users of your reports
- New read-only RPT file called RPTR that allows you to control who can see the internals of your report design.  You create a RPTR file by exporting it from an RPT.  After that, RPTR files can only be opened by the report viewers.  oUR Report designer tools will refuse to open RPTR files - protecting your internal business logic in the report
- Improved embedded report designer - for example you can now create dynamic, cascading parameters
- Various .NET API improvements to improve the migration for COM-based RDC customers
- Lighter weight English-only runtime for reduced deployment size
- More flexible MSI deployment to replace MSM use cases

In conclusion

Visual Studio 2010 allows developers to:
- Receive Crystal Reports in a different manner than before
- Continue to benefit from a free version of Crystal Reports that's fully integrated with Visual Studio
- Get a significant upgrade in features compared to Visual Studio 2008
- See slight modifications to licensing that will mostly impact those who redistribute web applications externally

Crystal Report Hosting :: Working with Crystal Report Viewers

clock June 3, 2010 17:42 by author Administrator
Crystal Report Viewers work as a container of a report and allow us to view a crystal report in Windows and Web applications. Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET provides two report viewers – Windows Forms Viewer and Web Forms Viewer. As you can guess from these names, Windows Forms Viewer control is used to view reports in Windows Forms applications and Web Forms Viewer is used to display reports in Web Forms applications.

ASPHostCentral.com, as a leading Crystal Report provider, proudly presents this article to anyone and we believe it may benefit ASP.NET community or anyone who are using Crystal Report. We have a demo of our own Crystal Report project and you can preview it at http://crystalreportdemo.asphostcentral.com. If you are looking to host your Crystal Report project, look no further as with ASPHostCentral.com, you can start from as low as $4.99/month only!

The integration of Crystal Reports in Visual Studio.NET and the availability of wizards and tools have made writing reports a piece of cake for developers. Visual Studio .NET hides all the details from developers and provides them easy to use user interface so they can concentrate on designing the layouts of the reports. But it's always a good idea to understand what goes under the hood. In this article, we will explore the Crystal Report Viewers and their functionality.Crystal Report Viewers work as a container of a report and allow us to view a crystal report in Windows and Web applications. Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET provides two report viewers - Windows Forms Viewer and Web Forms Viewer.

As you can guess from these names, Windows Forms Viewer control is used to view reports in Windows Forms applications and Web Forms Viewer is used to display reports in Web Forms applications.

Crystal Reports Viewer for Windows Forms

The CrystalReportViewer class defined in the CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms namespace represents a Crystal Report Viewer for Windows Forms (viewer afterwards). This class is a user control and can be used as any other user controls. This control is available in the Toolbox and you can simply drag it to a Form to add the control to the form.To view a report in the viewer, you simply need to set the ReportSource property of the control. The ReportSource property can be either a full name of the report file, a strongly typed report, or a ReportDocument object.

The following code snippet binds a report with hard coded full path of the report to the viewer:

crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = @"C:\temp\Customers.rpt";The following code snippet binds a strongly typed report to the viewer:Customers custReport = new Customers();
crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = custReport;

The following code snippet creates a ReportDocument object, loads a report using the Load method and binds the ReportDocument object to the viewer:

CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument doc =new CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument();
doc.Load(@"C:\temp\Customers.rpt");
crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = doc;

Customizing the Behavior of Crystal Report Viewer

Using the CrystalReportViewer class members, we can customize the behavior of the viewer such as disabling or enabling viewer toolbar buttons, adding custom zoom factor, or moving to different views of the report programmatically. The default Crystal Report Viewer looks like the following:

The first four buttons on the viewer allow us to move first, previous, next, and last page of the report. The next button can be used to jump to a particular page. Next three buttons are used to close the view, print the report, and refresh the report respectively.

Next button allows you to export reports as to various files such as a pdf, tif, doc, or rtf. The next button is a toggle for grouping if a report has groups. Next two buttons are for zooming and search.By using the properties and methods of CrystalReportViewer , we can customize the default settings of the viewer.

Some of the common properties of CrystalReportViewer are following:
ActiveViewIndex and ViewCount

A page in the report is called a view. The active page is called active view. The ActiveViewIndex property gets or sets the active view in the viewer and ViewCount returns total number of views in a report.

DisplayToolbar

You can display or hide the toolbar using this property. The following code snippet hides the toolbar.

crystalReportViewer1.DisplayToolBar = false;ShowCloseButton, ShowExportButton, ShowGotoPageButton, ShowGroupTreeButton, ShowPrintButton, ShowRefreshButton, ShowTextSearchButton, and ShowZoomButton properties can be used to show or hide the respective buttons.

CrystalReportViewer Methods

We can manage the functionality of the viewer buttons programmatically using its members. The CrystalReportViewer class provides methods to export, print, refresh, close, search, zoom, and navigation functionality. The following table lists the CrystalReportViewer class methods:
CloseView Closes a view tab in the viewer.
DrillDownOnGroup Drills down on a group.
ExportReport Exports the report displayed in the viewer.
GetCurrentPageNumber Gets the current page number of the report.
PrintReport Prints the report displayed in the viewer.
RefreshReport Refreshes the report displayed in the viewer.
SearchForText Searches the report for the given text.
ShowFirstPage Shows the first page of the report.
ShowGroupTree Shows the group tree in the viewer.
ShowLastPage Shows the last page of the report.
ShowNextPage Shows the next page of the report.
ShowNthPage Shows the specified page of the report.
ShowPreviousPage Shows the previous page of the report.
Zoom Changes the magnification level of the viewer

Crystal Report Hosting :: Cannot display a Crystal Report Graph

clock May 31, 2010 14:10 by author Administrator
Some of you may experience problems when deploying your Crystal Report project to a shared server. One of the common problems that you will face is the inability for the server to display a graph. You may be confused as the graph displays properly on your local PC, but it is not working when deploying it to a shared server.

Below are a few things you may want to check when you need to deploy a .Net 2.0 web application that integrates Crystal Reports:

Deploy Crystal components

First, and rather obvious, is to make sure the correct version of Crystal components are installed on the server. If you have the Visual Studio SDK installed, you can look for CRRedist2005_x86.msi, which is in this folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\BootStrapper\Packages\CrystalReports on your machine. Running that installation on the server will make sure all components required for Crystal Reports are properly installed on your machine.

If you have a setup project for your web application, you can add a merge module to that project. Crystal Reports provides four merge modules for download at this location. Depending on your needs, you may need to add any combination of these to your setup project. Which module is required for your application can be found in this document on the Business Objects support site.

Web.Config settings

In order for a Crystal Reports viewer to work, the following settings must be added to the appSettings section in the web.Config file:

<add key="CrystalImageCleaner-AutoStart" value="true"/>
<add key="CrystalImageCleaner-Sleep" value="60000"/>
<add key="CrystalImageCleaner-Age" value="120000"/>

This will ensure that the temporary images for Crystal are removed when they are no longer required. The following setting must be added the the httpHandlers section.

<add verb="GET" path="CrystalImageHandler.aspx" type="CrystalDecisions.Web.CrystalImageHandler, CrystalDecisions.Web, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304"/>

This is required, because otherwise all you will see is an empty box with a red cross in it.

aspnet_client files

Last, but certainly not least, check the aspnet_client folder in the root folder of your web site. This folder should contain a folder with the name CrystalReportWebFormViewer3. That folder must exist in the following path: system_web\2_0_50727. If that folder is not there, copy it from your local machine. It should be in the folder C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ASP.NETClientFiles.

ASPHostCentral :: Using Crystal Viewer to Display your Crystal Reports

clock March 17, 2009 15:56 by author Administrator

Introduction

For many Crystal Report creators, there has not been a good way to distribute your reports without additional programming. You can programmatically export to PDF then in your program email it or use BusinessObjects Enterprise to set up your report to a distribution list using a particular format. Now there is a free viewer called the Crystal Viewer that you can utilize to allow others without a version of Crystal Reports to view your report. The beauty of this viewer is how you can use many of the natural features inherent in Crystal for other users.

System Requirements

-
Crystal Reports XI
- SQL Server 2005

How to distribute Crystal Viewer?

Giving your consumers immediate access to Crystal Reports Viewer XI is fast and easy. You can send the link to download the viewer to your consumer in an email or on the web page displaying the viewer. So let us say you email a sales report every week as an email attachment. In the body of that report place the link to
http://www.businessobjects.com/products/reporting/crystalreports/viewer/en/download.asp with some text saying something to the effect of "If you cannot view this report, follow the instructions from this link to download the viewer."

This allows consumers to access the viewer enabling them to explore the report information interactively on their desktops both on and offline.

Using the Viewer to view a report

Let us assume you have emailed a report in email. This report is a summary report and someone wants to view this. It is quite simple once you have downloaded and installed the Crystal Reports Viewer XI. Once this viewer is installed in your system, the customer that receives your distribution can simply click on your report. The report opens up and the customer can then view it and do more.

Besides viewing reports, using the new viewer software allows you to share reports online on the CrystalReports.com site. Using the On-Demand option, select the "Share Report on-line" and you can save your report to crystalreports.com. If you are looking to have a place to store your reports, this may be an option for you.

You can also save reports to your Business Objects Enterprise Server. To do this, go to your Edit menu then to your configure server connections. From this menu click the Add button to add a server. You need to know the name of the business objects enterprise server and the log on credentials. Once you set this up, you can open your reports to the Business Objects server and save reports to the Business Objects server.

Once the report is open the consumer can view the report properties that have been set up. For instance, keywords, Author, the title, comments and a subject are available to view. Also, the consumer can export this report to Excel, RTF formats or pdf from within the viewer.  For me this is a key feature to make available to consumers of the report. This makes the viewer valuable for more than just report developers.

If the report designer has set up the report to allow drill-downs, the consumers also will be able to drill down into the reports. This is up to the designer, so make sure you select drill down on grouped sections when designing your reports. Selecting drill down in design makes the drill down feature available to consumers of your reports. Of course we assume those end users or consumers utilize the Crystal Report Viewer XI.

On the File menu there are options to print either the currently selected report or the entire report including hidden sections. For large reports if the end user needs to find something, you can use the Search option. Simply use select Edit from the menu options. Then select Find from the Edit menu and enter your text. You can also select options to match case or not match it from the drop down under the textbox for entering the search text.

Summary

In this article we have gone through the new Crystal Report Viewer XI.  It is a nice new development for end-users who do not have the full Crystal Reports XI software installed on their machine. The viewer can be installed individually or on your intranet you can make this a mandatory installation.
